Eye Care / Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK)

Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK)

Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) is one of the latest advances in eye care for the treatment of corneal dystrophies, corneal scars, and certain corneal infections. Only a short time ago, people with these disorders would most likely have needed a corneal transplant. PTK uses the excimer laser to treat corneal surface diseases and scars. PTK is performed by removing the epithelium (or outer skin of the cornea) and then, applying the laser to the surface of the cornea.

The goal is to produce a smoother and clearer cornea, and not necessarily to reduce dependency upon eyeglasses or contact lenses.  In contrast, the goal in PRK is to reduce dependency upon eyeglasses or contact lenses.

PTK is considered a medical treatment and is often covered by insurance plans. PTK is for those of any age who have corneal surface diseases such as:

  • Recurrent epithelial erosion syndrome.

  • Shallow corneal scars.

  • Corneal dystrophies, such as lattice dystrophy or granular dystrophy.

If you think PTK is a procedure that you or someone you know may benefit from, schedule a consultation with Dr. Martinez, a Fellowship Cornea Specialist.
